UK to China Football Cultural Exchange Tour 2018
We embarked on a remarkable journey with eight young football enthusiasts from Leyton, London, who, along with their manager Carl, travelled to Hangzhou, China, for a unique football and cultural exchange experience. This tour wasn’t just about football matches and sightseeing; it was an opportunity to broaden perspectives, build friendships, and engage with the vibrant culture and history of China. Broadening Horizons in a Globalised World
In today’s increasingly interconnected world, it’s essential for young people to experience different cultures, meet new friends from diverse backgrounds, and learn about life beyond their own. This tour aimed to do just that. It offered our young footballers a chance to step out of their familiar surroundings and experience the excitement and wonder of a place vastly different from Leyton.
For our young athletes, the interactions went far beyond the typical tourist experience. They spent meaningful time with local kids, exchanged stories, and learned firsthand about each other’s lives. The journey emphasised that while backgrounds may differ, the common love for football bridges any gap. Friendships were quickly formed, and bonds grew strong as they shared their mutual passion for the sport.

A highlight of our exchange tour was the series of friendly matches organised with local school teams and even the prestigious Zhejiang Province football team. The matches were more than just games; they were celebrations of sportsmanship, talent, and unity. The enthusiasm was palpable, with over 1,000 parents, family members, and local community members coming out to watch the games.
The kids embraced the challenge with energy and teamwork, developing their football skills while appreciating the skill level and dedication of their Chinese counterparts. It was a special experience for everyone involved, with moments of laughter, tension, and joy shared by the players and the audience alike.
Exploring Hangzhou and Surrounding Areas
Between matches, the group explored Hangzhou, a city rich in history and beauty. From the scenic West Lake to the bustling markets, the kids experienced a side of China that was both modern and traditional. They learned about the culture, tasted new foods, and practised a bit of Mandarin, further expanding their view of the world.
